Help us create a world where no one feels like they are on their own. Be part of our movement.
Young men want to make a difference. They also want to know how.
That came through strongly in a recent conversation with some of the young men we work with.
They talked about wanting safe spaces where they can be vulnerable.
About knowing that asking for help doesn’t make you any less of a man.
About how supporting a mate isn’t always about jumping in with advice or trying to fix the problem.
Sometimes it’s about listening. Respecting someone’s boundaries. Letting them know what they’re going through matters.
And one young man summed it up perfectly:
“It’s one thing saying that I want to make a difference and then actually making a difference.”
Young men care deeply about the people around them. They want to know how to support their mates, how to be there for others and how to become the kind of person who can make a positive difference.
Sometimes they just need the space, support and skills to work out what that looks like and how.

“I think a lot of boys don’t wanna look like they’re struggling.”
One of the young men we work with said this. And it says a lot about why opening up can be hard.
We don’t want to look weak.
We don’t want to admit we’re struggling.
Sometimes we don’t even want to say, “I don’t know.”
But vulnerability doesn’t always mean sharing something huge. Sometimes it’s just being honest enough to say:
“I’m not sure.”
“I’m having a hard time.”
“I need a hand.”
At Top Blokes, our youth workers and mentors model that openness first.
They show young men that it’s ok to have emotions, it`s ok to struggle sometimes, and it`s ok not to have everything figured out.
When you tell a young person they need to open up, or be more vulnerable, that can be a hard concept to wrap your head around.
Sometimes they need to see what opening up looks like first. And trust that when they do open up, they are not met with shame. That trust takes time, but that`s where the real conversations start.

Everyone deserves someone in their corner.
For Matt, that person was his older sister.
Someone a little older. Someone he could trust. Someone who could give him advice, help him make sense of things and remind him he wasn’t figuring it all out on his own.
That experience stayed with him.
And it’s a big part of why he became a Top Blokes youth worker and mentor.
Matt knows what it feels like to have someone back you. Now he wants to give that same feeling to the young men he works with.
“The comfort that having a mentor brings you is something that I think is so important.”
Sometimes mentoring is as simple as that. Showing up. Listening. Offering a bit of perspective. And letting a young person know they’ve got someone in their corner.

He found a place where he could talk.
Now he’s helping make sure other boys get that same chance.
Beltran came to Top Blokes at a time when he was carrying a lot, including grief after losing a loved one.
What stuck with him most was having a safe space to talk about what was going on and learning that speaking up helped more than keeping everything to himself.
He also picked up practical ways to support his mates when they’re doing it tough.
Now, Beltran and a group of his friends are taking on Lift the Load for Mental Health together.
Their reason? To raise money so more Top Blokes mentors can reach more schools and more boys can get the support they need.
These young men got support, learnt how to back their mates, and now they`re choosing to pay it forward. We think that`s pretty awesome.
Only 5 days remain in Lift the Load for Mental Health. There’s still time to get behind young men like Beltran and help take that support even further.
Let’s finish strong. 💛 Head to the link in our bio.
